According to the report by Kaspersky Lab—a global cyber security company, China and South Korea are the top two countries in the world threatened by Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in the second quarter of 2017.
The same report revealed that three countries out of top five victims of DDoS attacks are from Asia Pacific (APAC) region—China, South Korea, the US, Hong Kong and UK.
Lack of strong cyber security measure is one of the prominent reasons behind increasing threat of DDoS attacks in APAC. This is because cost of DDoS mitigation solution is quite high even for large organisations in the region.
Despite cost constraint, the aftermath of DDoS attack has compelled the organisations in the region to adopt DDoS mitigation solution. It is likely to save huge amount for organisations as DDoS protection can minimise chances of ransomware. This is one of the key reasons to drive demand for all three DDoS solutions—on-premise, cloud based and hybrid solution—in APAC.
On-Premise DDoS Solution: This DDoS solution consists of hardware or appliances. On the premises of organization, it is deployed at the edge of organization’s network devices like routers or switches. The data—legitimate and illegitimate—are passed through edge router before diverting to DDoS solution for mitigation. After analysis and mitigation, the legitimate data are diverted to distributing routers which routes the traffic to targeted servers. Its major advantages are:
- Internal security team can manage and monitor entire traffic
- It quickly detects and mitigates application layer attacks
Most of the countries in APAC are likely to adopt on-premise solution widely especially, Greater China, ASEAN nations and Japan. This is because the solution offers security against application layer attacks as it (attacks) is likely to surge at rapid pace in coming days.
This segment (on-premise) of DDoS protection market in APAC is expected to grow over 23% (CAGR) reaching almost US $477 million by 2021.
Cloud-based DDoS Solution: The service based or cloud-based DDoS Solution is offered by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs). Their service will safeguard organisation from volumetric attacks as they deploy anti-DDoS mitigation solution at ISP/MSSP scrubbing centers. It (cloud-based DDoS Solution) mitigates the attacks before the illegitimate traffic reaches at the connection point between ISP/MSSP and the organisation. Its advantages:
- It is cost effective as nothing is charged for maintenance and configuration
- Its deployment is quick and easy
- Effective against network flood attacks
The increasing rate of network flood attacks is driving organizations to deploy cloud-based solution. The market of cloud based DDoS solution in APAC is expected to grow by more than 37.5% (CAGR) and is estimated to cross US $464 million in next four years. It is projected to outpace on-premise DDoS solution market after 2021.
Hybrid Solution: Organizations are widely deploying this DDoS solution these days because it is regarded best against volumetric attacks. The solution is combination of on-premise and cloud mitigation. As per attack characteristics tools and volume, it chooses appropriate mitigation location and technique. With on-premise attack protection device, the solution offers immediate and automatic detection and mitigation of attacks. Normally, attacks are mitigated on premises. But if the attack is strong and is likely to block the internet pipe of the organization, then the solution activates cloud diverting the traffic there (cloud) where illegitimate traffic is scrubbed. Its merits are:
- The combination between on-premise and cloud based solution ensures better security
- The on-premise solution offers short response time against attack
By 2021, the overall DDoS protection market in APAC region is estimated to grow at over 29% CAGR and is expected to generate more than US $940 million in the projected period. The generated revenue is more than half of the global revenue which is predicted to reach US $1800 million by the end of 2021. It means APAC is emerging as lucrative destination for DDoS mitigation vendors.
